The Alice Magistrate’s Court has warned that it will strike the University of Fort Hare fraud and corruption case from the roll if the State’s investigation is not finalised within four months.

This emerged on Thursday when 16 people accused in connection with the allegations appeared before Magistrate Eras Venter in the Eastern Cape court, sitting in Dimbaza near Qonce (formerly King William’s Town).

Senior university officials and service providers are alleged to have defrauded the university of R171 million in a racketeering scheme that, according to the State’s allegations, “milked” the academic institution.
