Experts are not satisfied with writing code with the help of AI in software engineering. Sridhar Vembu has said that due to AI, code writing has increased, but productivity has not increased much because AI creates its own problems in its codes, which software engineers have to solve.

Sridhar Vembu said, the times ahead are going to be very interesting.
Tech veteran and Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has expressed concern over the codes being written by AI. He wrote after a post by François Chollet, founder of the NDEA Intelligence Science Lab, that hundreds of billions of dollars are being invested on the basis that the productivity of software engineering can increase 10 times or more, but so far the increase in productivity has been very little. Vembu wrote that the times ahead are going to be very interesting.

What did Francois Chollet say?

On writing code with AI in software engineering, François Chollet had said that developers are now writing more code with the help of AI tools, but the real value created by them is not increasing much. Chollet said in his post that there is a big difference between the amount of code being written by AI and the productivity.

  • The amount of code shipped by developers has increased almost 10 times.
  • But there has been little or no increase in net developer productivity.

What are the reasons for this?

According to the report, developers are now solving only small or minor problems by writing more code. At the same time, new code generated from AI often creates new problems of its own creation. It takes more time for developers to fix these. That means the developers have to fix the things created by AI later. Chollet clearly stated that the new code is creating its own problems.

What did Sridhar Vembu say?

Sridhar Vembu wrote in his social media post,
‘A lot of knowledge, but zero understanding’
Hundreds of billions of dollars are being invested on the premise that software engineering productivity can increase 10 times or more. But so far, the gains in productivity have been very small. The times ahead are going to be interesting.

Software engineer’s work most affected

AI has influenced the work of software engineers the most. Recently, Boris Cherny, top engineer of AI company Anthropic, had said that the post of software engineer will soon be abolished. He told that no one writes code by hand at Anthropic anymore. The company’s engineers, product team and even he himself does not write code by hand.
