Road safety in Mpumalanga (Photo: Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety)

A 35-year-old man was arrested over the Easter weekend after he reportedly drove at 200 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N3 toll road between Villiers and Heidelberg. The incident took place in the afternoon around 16:35.

In a separate incident on the same road, a 38-year-old Pakistani man was caught driving at 176 km/h.

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison in Mpumalanga, Jackie Macie, says both drivers were charged at the Grootvlei police station with reckless and negligent driving and released on bail of R2 000 each.

“We welcome the efforts of law enforcement officers to bring reckless drivers to book. Punishing dangerous driving will help prevent fatal accidents on our roads.”

In another incident, three pedestrians died on Friday afternoon around 16:00 after they were hit by a sedan on the N4 toll road between Machadodorp and Belfast.

The deceased include a woman and two minors, believed to be her children. They died at the scene.

Police are currently investigating three charges of culpable homicide.

Macie expressed his condolences to the family and warned motorists to be vigilant. “Motorists should always be on the lookout for pedestrians. We also urge pedestrians to be careful and only cross at designated places when it is safe.”
