Although South African consumers are eating more chicken, on average, data shows that demand for chicken livers, budget-friendly chicken carcasses and other offal cuts has risen sharply and continues to grow. 

Hume International Operations and Logistics believe that South Africans are increasingly “buying down” on chicken products to cope with rising living costs and tight household budgets. 

Citing data for the first quarter of 2024, the food distributor Hume International confirmed that total import volumes of whole birds had nearly tripled compared to the same period in 2023, rising 187.47% year-on-year.
