After being closed for more than 24 hours due to heavy snowfall, Eastern Cape traffic officials requested the services of grader machines to clear Barkly Pass on the R58 between Barkly East and Elliot.

The route was closed on Monday morning and had yet to reopen to traffic late on Tuesday, said Unathi Binqose, the spokesperson for the Eastern Cape’s transport department.

“The graders have been brought in to clear the thick blanket of snow that forced the closure of this road for well over 24 hours,” said Binqose.

Binqose warned motorists to be vigilant because strong winds had gripped some parts of the Eastern Cape.

“Strong winds continue to wreak havoc in the province, damaging houses and disrupting the flow of traffic, as vehicles have been toppled over on the N2 road, near Dutywa.

“Road users, motorists in particular, are urged to be extra cautious or avoid being on the road completely if their travelling is not essential,” said Binqose.
