Shaka iLembe star Nomzamo Mbatha won an award for Best African Actress in Amsterdam at the 2024 Septimius Awards earlier this week.

Mbatha plays one of the main roles, Nandi, in the Mzansi Magic show and has previously appeared in Coming 2 America and Assassin (2023), which starred Bruce Willis.

The Septimius Awards is an international award ceremony for films, documentaries, shorts, animations, TV shows, and screenplays.

“Our goal is to showcase films and projects from around the world and grant awards to the best nominees at our yearly award ceremony,” says the organisation’s website.

The organisation awards actors from each continent.

“What makes the Septimius Awards unique is our approach to three categories: Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Film. Unlike most conventional award ceremonies, we have decided to split these three categories by continent. This creates a greater global representation of talent.”

Mbatha celebrated her win on Instagram, posting photos from the event.

“Coming back home with a little extra weight in my luggage. God’s dream for my life is pretty cool to witness. Thankful for the spirit of surrender and hard work: to trust in the journey and believe in the kept promises,” the actor wrote in a caption.

She thanked the Septimius Awards, Bomb Productions, MultiChoice, the Shaka iLembe viewers, her directors and her language coach.

“To the entire cast and crew of 200 creatives on our set (love you guys)… you make me better… and the hundreds of our background actors who help us create magic on screen,” Mbatha continued.

“A special thank you to my friends and family – who allow me the space to be in a cocoon when I’m creating and who hold my hand when I doubt myself.”

US actor Cuba Gooding Jr. also attended the ceremony and received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Shaka iLembe also won in the Best Costume Design category, with Sheli Masondo receiving the award.
