The police’s task force on the Madlanga Commission arrested a 50-year-old senior municipal official on charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the law on Saturday morning.

The official was arrested at his home in Gauteng.

Brig. Athlenda Mathe, national police spokesperson, says the task force is still looking for more suspects in connection with the case.

“The arrest stems from an ongoing investigation into corruption in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police (EMPD). No further comment will be made at this stage on the merits of this case.”

According to Mathe, the case has nothing to do with any investigation by the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (Opod) or any evidence given before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry”.

“Simply put, it has nothing to do with the murder of Mbense or the blue light case.”

“The murder of Mbense” is in reference to the murdered Emmanuel Mbense (52) who was allegedly tortured to death by police and private security officers in Brakpan in 2022.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
