Firefighters are currently on the scene at the Johannesburg Country Club in Auckland Park after a fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon.
Employees had to be evacuated as dark plumes of smoke rose from the building.
The fire was contained in the kitchen, reception area, and dining hall.
Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said they got a call about the fire around 16:00 and immediately dispatched vehicles.
“So far, we don’t have any injuries that have been reported,” he said, adding that all staff had been accounted for.
The club was established in 1906 and is a registered heritage site.
Security was tight at the premises and members of the media were denied access.
Some inquisitive bystanders stood around at the scene.
A group of staffers was seen leaving the premises with their belongings.
One staff member told News24 that he heard a commotion while he was in the building, and people were screaming “fire fire”.
“I saw smoke, but I was not sure where it was coming from. I then followed the voices that were calling us to come out, and I just went out of the building,” he said.
“My shift was meant to end at 21:00.”
