Authorities are searching for a seafarer who reportedly fell overboard a flagged cargo vessel – the MV Serenity Diva – about 70km south of Cape Recife in the Eastern Cape on Monday.

According to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa), the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town reported that the incident was raised by the vessel’s crew at about 03:00 via a distress call.

“According to Telkom Maritime Radio, the vessel’s captain was not sure when the crewman went missing, except that the crewman was last seen wearing blue overalls. It was not clear whether he had a lifejacket,” said the MRCC.

In response, two vessels – the MV Cedrice Oldendorff and MV Hoanh Son – are assisting in the search.

Samsa said a request had been made to Telkom Maritime Radio to broadcast a MayDay relay.

The search is ongoing.
