A fire broke out at a Midrand residential complex on Tuesday night, resulting in the evacuation of scores of residents.

According to City of Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Xolile Khumalo, firefighters were called to Broadwalk Urban Village late in the evening.

On arrival, they found the second floor of the building “engulfed in flames”, and had to evacuate the residents of 130 units.

Firefighters carried out a room-by-room search and no fatalities have been reported so far.

“[Residents] who sustained injuries were taken to hospital. The number of residents is not determined at the moment,” said Khumalo.

“The cause of the fire will be investigated as soon as firefighting operations are completed.”

Khumalo said the City had engaged with the owners of the complex to arrange alternative accommodation.

“EMS continues to urge residents of Johannesburg to scrutinise accommodation facilities before taking residency and to please ensure that all electrical appliances are switched off after use,” added Khumalo.
