In a bid to create local solar panel manufacturing capacity in South Africa, a 10% import duty has been instituted on solar PV panels, cells, and modules brought into the country.

The import duty was gazetted and signed by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on 28 June and came into effect immediately.

The solar PV import tax was one of the proposed measures in the master plan for the renewable energy industry, which aims to create 25 000 jobs by 2030 and foster R15 billion in new investment through green energy initiatives, which was recently finalised by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) before the department was split as per the new Cabinet.
