South Africa has updated its risk of being used as a hub for terrorist financing from moderate to high as the Islamic State (IS) makes inroads into southern Africa, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has warned.

The FIC, which gathers and analyses information to combat financial crime and money laundering, said in a new report that the country’s current terrorist financing threat “emanates predominantly from the IS, its affiliates, its supporters, and its ideology”.

“From a global and regional perspective […] the activities of [IS] and its affiliates have seen them become one of the deadliest global terror groups,” said the FIC.
