The City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management says residents can expect delays in their refuse collection service due to the severe weather conditions in parts of the city this week.

“Residents are advised that refuse collection delays are expected for the rest of the week due to flooding. This has affected the movement of vehicles,” the City said.

It added that its teams were “battling to clear backlogs”.

“The impact of rainy conditions are also slowing the teams down, and there is likely to be a knock-on effect on refuse collection schedules for the rest of the week.”

The City advised affected households to take their bins out every day until they were collected.

“Currently, delays are not extending beyond one day in most cases,” it said.

“Teams will work over the weekend to clear any backlog that still exists at the close of business on Friday, 30 August.”

The City added that it was working to ensure service delivery as far as possible, and asked for patience.

“We ask residents to bear with us during this challenging time.”

It said the Schaapkraal drop-off facility had also been closed temporarily due to flooding. Residents were urged to retain their waste until the site reopened or make use of closer alternatives. A list of drop-off sites can be found here.
