Despite their Test tour of New Zealand playing itself out to a deafening background noise of them being a South African “C” team, Neil Brand’s Proteas ironically find themselves in exactly the same place their full-strength counterparts were two years ago.
A slew of the usual frontline players is unavailable for this series due to their commitment to the recently concluded SA20 competition.
Going into the second and final Test (on Tuesday, at 00:00 SA time) at Seddon Park in Hamilton, Brand’s side have lost a first Test in which they could have taken a pasting – New Zealand decided against enforcing the follow-on to save their bowlers’ legs – by 281 runs.
