All prepaid electricity meters will stop working on 24 November unless they are updated. Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and the Eastern Cape are behind pace. (Gallo Images/Fani Mahuntsi).

Almost five million prepaid electricity meters in South Africa are still vulnerable to cease functioning on 24 November, the majority of which are in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

This comes as many prepaid electricity meters are still operating on old software programs that will stop working owing to a date rollover problem.

It can be avoided by moving the meters onto a new numbering system, which is done by inserting two unique 20-digit key revision numbers into every meter.
