  • A funeral service for the late Pravin Gordhan will take place in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a special official funeral category 2 to honour Gordhan.
  • The family has requested that in lieu of floral tributes, mourners offer donations to charities of their choice, or to the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.

The funeral service of late minister Pravin Gordhan will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban on Thursday, the Presidency said on Monday. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the special official funeral category 2 service will start at 10:00. 

“The special official funeral category 2 will entail ceremonial elements performed by the South African Police Service. The funeral service will be followed by a private cremation,” said Magwenya.

He added that the Gordhan family has requested that in lieu of floral tributes, mourners offer donations to charities of their choice, or the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.

Gordhan, 75, died last Friday after a short illness.

The veteran served as minister of finance from 2009 until 2014 and again from 2015 until 2017.

He also served as minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs from 2014 until 2015, and as minister of public enterprises from February 2018 until June 2024.

Before his various terms as minister, Gordhan was commissioner of the South African Revenue Service in 1999, after a period as deputy commissioner.

Tributes have been pouring in since Gordhan’s death was announced on Friday morning. 

Ramaphosa, the ANC and its leagues, veterans, alliance partners, as well as a range of political parties, civil society groups, business and religious organisations, and his comrades have sent tributes to Gordhan’s family and messages of support.

The family said tributes and messages had also come from people and organisations across the world who had worked with him.

Meanwhile, the ANC has announced that it will hold memorial services for Gordhan in Johannesburg and Durban on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
