The South African Policing Union (Sapu) and the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) want those accused of killing police officers to be denied the right to apply for bail. 

The unions said attacks on police officers had reached alarming levels with criminals having no regard for the men and women in blue.

The national police said 33 police officers were killed between January and May this year.
