Four armed robbers were shot dead in an intelligence-driven operation in Yeoville on Wednesday morning, while a fifth suspect was injured and arrested.

According to Capt. Tintswalo Sibeko, police spokesperson, said the police received information about a group of suspects who were allegedly involved in a series of armed robberies at around 05:30. The robbers apparently followed victims from the OR Tambo airport.

“A joint team consisting of the police’s counter-intelligence unit, Gauteng’s tactical response team (TRT), the provincial traffic police’s air unit, CAP Specialized Operations and Tracker Connect carried out the operation.”

The team responded to information that the suspects were driving a Suzuki Swift with fake number plates.

“Police attempted to intercept the vehicle in Yeoville, which led to a high-speed chase. A shootout then broke out.”

Four of the suspects died during the shooting. A fifth suspect sustained injuries and was arrested; he is currently being held in the hospital under police guard.

The police also seized three unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

According to Sibeko, the police have already opened cases of murder, attempted murder and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The serious violent crime unit will lead the investigation and, in collaboration with crime intelligence, compile the suspects’ profiles.

“Our investigation will continue thoroughly, and the firearms will be sent for ballistics tests to determine if they may have been used in other criminal activities.”

The police appealed to the public to report criminal activities to the Stop Crime number on 08600 10111, or send tips via the MySAPS app.
