The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is delighted with pres. Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the local government elections will take place this year on Wednesday 4 November.

This announcement is considered an important step to gain certainty in the election process.

According to Sy Mamabolo, the chief electoral officer, this is essential so that the commission can finalize its planning for the big day.

“The announcement of the election date provides clarity to all role players and ensures certainty in planning for the Electoral Commission as we continue our work to host a free and fair municipal election,” says Mamabolo.

Registration essential

The IEC asks all eligible South Africans to make sure they are properly registered. This is especially important for people who have recently moved or have never registered before. The commission reminds people that they can only vote in the district where they live.

“The Electoral Commission encourages all South Africans entitled to vote who are not yet registered, or who have changed their place of residence, to ensure that they are registered in the voting district where they live, as voters may only vote at the polling station where they are registered,” reads the statement from the IEC.

Official proclamation still on the way

Although the president has already confirmed the date, the IEC explains that there are still a few legal steps that must take place before the electoral roll officially closes. The formal announcement must first be ratified by the relevant minister.

“According to the law, the official proclamation will be issued by the minister of cooperative government and traditional affairs, at which point the electoral roll will be closed,” explains the IEC.

How to register

Voters can update their registration details from home without having to travel anywhere. The commission offers an online platform for those who want to do it on their mobile phones or computers, while a special registration weekend will also be available for those who prefer to do it in person at polling stations.

Prospective voters can use the commission’s online registration platform at http://registertovote.elections.org.za to register or update their registration details.

“Alternatively, during the national voter registration weekend on June 20 and 21, citizens can register at the same polling stations where they intend to cast their votes on election day.

“The commission encourages all citizens entitled to vote to take advantage of this opportunity to verify their registration details early and to participate fully in shaping the future of their local communities.”
