A report by National Treasury has shown that provincial government departments have increasingly failed to pay their suppliers on time, with the number of older invoices dramatically increasing by 53% at the end of the last financial year.

Unless determined otherwise through a contract, government departments are required to pay their bills within 30 days.

However, according to Treasury’s latest report on noncompliance with payment of suppliers’ invoices, the number of invoices at provincial departments older than 30 days and not paid has increased to more than 113 000 invoices totalling R10.6 billion at the end of the 2023/24 financial year.
