One of the eight detainees who escaped from the isolation police station in the Eastern Cape’s holding cells on Saturday was re-apprehended on Monday.

Brig. Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says a multidisciplinary task force arrested Siphelele Mkhulisi on Monday morning around 08:00 at his aunt’s house in Masakala, which is located near the border in Matatiele, where he was lying down and sleeping. The task force consisted of visible policing units, K9 and detectives. “The team approached the premises tactically and Mkhulisi was re-arrested without incident.”

Mkhulisi was in custody for murder when he and seven others escaped from the police station in the Maluti area. The other seven were also held on serious charges, including rape and assault.

Gantana says the investigation into the circumstances related to the escape, including a separate case of aiding and abetting (to a criminal), continues. “The team is actively following up on leads that will lead to the arrest of the other seven escapees.”

Members of the public are warned not to try to apprehend the escapees themselves, as they are dangerous criminals.

Anyone with information about their whereabouts can contact the investigative team directly: Sgt. Matbane at 076 342 4033 or const. Mantelefu at 073 109 7962.

Information can be shared confidentially via Stop Crime on 08600 10111.
