An off-duty KwaZulu-Natal police officer who shot dead his girlfriend at a Florida Road restaurant in Durban on Tuesday morning was himself shot and killed by a metro police office.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the shooting and said police in Berea were investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

Netshiunda said the information at hand pointed to the off-duty police officer having gone to his girlfriend’s workplace and opened fire on her.

“It is alleged that the woman went out to meet him only for him to draw his service pistol and fire shots at her. The victim ran back inside the restaurant, and the man followed her as he continued shooting,” said Netshiunda.

The woman was declared dead at the scene, while two other people sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. Netshiunda said Metro Police officers who were patrolling the area witnessed the incident and responded.

The off-duty cop was shot in the process and taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the motive for the woman’s killing was unknown at this stage, but domestic-related issues could not be ruled out.

ALS Paramedics, who responded to the incident, said the attack took place just after 01:00. Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics said responders found Metro Police and multiple security personnel at the scene.

Jamieson said the paramedics were shown to where four people lay with gunshot wounds.

“Three males and one female had been shot. Unfortunately, the female, believed to be in her thirties, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and there was nothing paramedics could do for her and she was declared deceased on the scene,” said Jamieson.

“Two other men sustained gunshot wounds to their upper bodies and were transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required.”
