Mineral Resources and Petroleum Minister Gwede Mantashe has hit back at criticism of his performance in the Cabinet, denying his new-streamlined portfolio — which now excludes energy — is a demotion. 

Mantashe reached out to News24 on Tuesday in response to its article, which suggests his streamlined portfolio is a demotion in light of poor past performance, while crediting new Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa for his success in addressing load shedding.

“It is not a demotion. I love it as it is now,” Mantashe said, adding:
