A woman whose niece drowned during a leadership camp organised by Equal Education (EE) has slammed the organisation for allegedly failing to comply with most of the recommendations of a panel it had commissioned to probe her death.

Avethandwa Nokhangela, 16, drowned at a beach at the Palm Springs Resort in East London on 29 April 2021 after getting into difficulty in the water.

The Grade 10 pupil from Xolani Senior Secondary School in Zwelitsha, outside East London, was among a group of so-called Equalisers, aged 15 to 17 years, who attended EE’s Eastern Cape leadership committee camp at Palms Springs Resort.
