The forests of KwaMthethwa under the Mfolozi Municipality will end, as the construction of a police station in this area has been completed.

This was revealed by the mayor of this municipality, Mr. Xolani Bhengu, at a press conference in Durban, on Friday.

He said the most common crime in this area is car theft and hijacking.

Bhengu said they currently have one station in KwaMbonambi.

“That station was able to help in KwaMthethwa, KwaSokhulu and Kwabuyazi. That meant that if something bad happened in KwaMthethwa, you would find that they are slow to respond because the Mfolozi area is very open. When we have two police stations, it means that they will be able to fight criminals, there will be fear and if they see more law enforcement officers, they will know to play away,” said Bhengu.

He said that the station, which was built in collaboration between the KwaZulu-Natal and national governments, has been completed, only the installation of electricity has been completed.

“No date has been set yet (when we will open) but I promise you that it will not be until July because the building is finished. We are waiting for the criminals to come in if they continue,” explained Bhengu.

He said he has made it clear that he does not want it to be built and become a non-functional building, the government promised that the services will be there as well as the workers.

“We said that we don’t want it to be repaired and then turn into just a building. I gave an example of the Mambuka police station that we all know was repaired by the government in partnership with Transnet, which was operational for a while because there were no operational resources. It ended up being destroyed and no longer operational.”
