The newly appointed Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, is an unknown quantity to both business and the labour sector.

Having served most of her political career in the Eastern Cape municipal provincial legislature, Meth was appointed, following a dismal election performance from the ANC, with former minister Thulas Nxesi left off its list for the National Assembly.

For years, labour ministers have had strong, historic ties with trade unions. Former ministers Nxesi and Membathisi Mdladlana were both members of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu), while former minister Mildred Oliphant was a former leader of the South African Commercial, Catering, and Allied Workers Union.
