The theatre production Mehlala, presented by The Market Theatre Laboratory, was part of the 2024 National Arts Festival programme in Makhanda and was performed at Victoria Primary School.
The play is directed by 2022 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner Billy Langa, who won the prize alongside Mahlatsi Mokgonyana for their collaboration, Tswalo.
The production has a fragmented narrative that zooms in on different facets of township communities and youth life. These types of communities are not homogenous, and their contexts greatly differ, but the play aims to highlight universal issues via a fictional township, Lebone.
