A serious collision between two heavy motor vehicles and two light vehicles on the N1 in the Free State claimed the lives of at least two people on Tuesday morning. Another person was seriously injured and three people suffered moderate injuries.
According to Sipho Towa, spokesman for the Free State emergency services, the heavy motor vehicles caught fire, after which the fire brigade and emergency services responded quickly to put out the fire and stabilize the injured.
“The accident occurred on the N1 between the Kroonvaal toll gate and Kroonvaal Engen petrol station. The N1 is still closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.”

Towa says motorists from Gauteng can take the R59 to Parys at the Kroonvaal exit and then use the R721 via Vredefort to Kroonstad to rejoin the N1.
Motorists from Kroonstad are recommended to take the R721 via Vredefort and Parys and then the R59 back to the N1.
“We appeal to motorists to use these routes and obey the instructions of law enforcement officers on the scene.
“Repair work on the N1 can only begin once the heavy motor vehicles have been removed and the road is safe to use again,” says Towa.
