Limpopo’s Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed that the N1 near Witvlag is still closed following a serious accident involving a bus from Malawi.

The scene of the accident was still being cleaned on Friday morning while traffic officers and police secured the area and managed traffic.

According to preliminary investigations, the bus which was traveling from Malawi to Gauteng is believed to have experienced mechanical problems. The bus was carrying 61 passengers.

The department says several deaths have already been reported, although the exact death toll has yet to be confirmed.

A total of 22 people suffered serious injuries, 17 suffered moderate injuries and five people were slightly injured.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

Traffic from Musina to Louis Trichardt is diverted at Wylliespoort to the left on the R523 (Nzhelele road). Motorists should drive via Siloam and later rejoin Witvlag on the N1.

Traffic from Louis Trichardt to Musina must turn right at Witvlag onto the R523, drive through Siloam/Nzhelele and rejoin the N1 at Wylliespoort.

The department warns motorists to reduce their speed on the detour routes, allow for severe traffic congestion and drive carefully, especially at night and in foggy conditions.

More details will be released as they become available.
