More than R390 million has been demanded in a string of ransoms in almost 80 SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Unit investigations since the start of the year.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said that since January, the unit has rescued 13 businessmen. Of these, eight were Portuguese businessmen, indicating that the kidnappers could be targeting a specific group.

News24 previously reported that two Portuguese businessmen were rescued this week. The first was rescued on Monday after he was kidnapped last weekend. A second man was rescued on Thursday, after he was kidnapped on Monday. Both men were found in Soweto.
