The Eastern Cape Department of Education says there are 9 300 Grade 12 pupils in the class of 2024 in the province who have never passed a grade in their entire schooling career.

The pupils, mostly from rural areas of the province, have been beneficiaries of the department’s progression policy, education MEC Fundile Gade said during a media briefing at the Mandla Makupula Education Leadership Institute in East London on Friday.

The department’s progression policy has been applicable to public schools since 2005 and is intended to minimise the high dropout rate and maximise school retention.
