Preliminary estimates show that the LIV golf tournament at Steyn City, which attracted more than 100 000 domestic and international visitors at the weekend, contributed almost R1 billion to the province’s economy.
The Gauteng provincial government congratulated the organizers, stakeholders, partners and the people of the province for hosting the tournament in the north of Johannesburg.
Elijah Mhlanga, spokesperson for the Gauteng provincial government, describes the tournament as a world-class sporting event that has resulted in significant economic benefits. The tournament showcased the province’s ability and “raised the country’s flag right across the world.”
The tournament follows shortly on the heels of the G20 leaders’ summit, which was also hosted in Gauteng. “The two events are a clear indication that Gauteng is the destination of choice for major international events, not only in South Africa, but also on the African continent.
Visitors arrived in the city through the Lanseria and OR Tambo international airports. “The inflow increased demand for hotels, restaurants, transportation and entertainment and supported jobs in the hospitality and retail sectors. Projected international global viewership numbers were expected to reach nearly one billion households across 200 international territories.
Preliminary estimates show the event is in line with the Visit Gauteng: Zwakala campaign’s goal of raising R23 billion in tourism revenue this financial year.

Panyaza Lesufi, Premier of Gauteng, together with Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie put in a bid for the tournament to be hosted in South Africa, specifically in Gauteng, as part of the provincial government’s commitment to strengthen the province’s position as a leading hub for business and lifestyle events in South Africa. “Hosting major events is one of the province’s most effective ways to drive economic growth, tourism and social transformation.
Organizers have already confirmed that the tournament will be held in Gauteng again next year – an announcement that the provincial government welcomes. “The decision is a powerful statement of confidence in our province and its people, and it shows that Gauteng is still a world-class destination for tourism, investments and great events,” he says.
The Gauteng government says a comprehensive and integrated security plan involving the police, municipal law enforcement and private security ensured the tournament went off without incident and the coordinated efforts of all security personnel who worked tirelessly to manage access routes, escort VIP delegations and protect critical infrastructure.
They say significant work has been undertaken by the national, provincial and local government as well as municipalities to refurbish critical infrastructure ahead of the tournament, including repairing potholes, rehabilitating street lights and launching more cleaning operations.
Lesufi commended municipal and provincial governments for their extraordinary delivery of municipal services, health and safety services during the gathering.
