The body of Brook Cheuvront was retrieved by an EMS helicopter on Sunday afternoon.

A 20-year-old woman from the United States has been found dead while hiking on Devil’s Peak, Western Cape, police said on Sunday evening.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie said a search party found the woman’s body at around 14:00.

“The body of the missing hiker was found in an area which is part of Devil’s Peak and retrieved by EMS helicopter,” Pojie said.

He said an inquest case had been opened.

“An autopsy will be conducted to determine the possible cause of death,” he said.

The woman had been identified as Brook Cheuvront from North Carolina, who reportedly went missing at noon on Saturday.

Her father, Steve, who took to Facebook on Sunday, said the family was devastated.

“Please take down all post looking for Brook. She was recovered. We are devastated. God help me and us (sic),” he said.

In earlier posts, Steve said he planned to fly to South Africa to help with the search.

“Please please. Let her be found. It will be daylight there in 90 min. Search and rescue. The US ambassador is aware. All resources will be sent. I may be flying over tomorrow (Sunday),” he said.
