The suspended MEC of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, has returned to the field, carrying out the duties of his organisation, the ANC. Mchunu, who is a member of the ANC’s executive committee, said he started doing ANC duties last week.

He said he wrote to the Secretary General of the ANC, Mr. Fikile Mbalula, informing him that he is returning to the activities of the organization.

“I have written to Mbalula to inform him that I am returning to work in the ANC from March 26. I have started doing the work of the organization now,” said Mchunu who is also a member of the committee responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization.

He said this while talking to SABC media. Mchunu was suspended from government service, by President Cyril Ramaphosa, following allegations made by the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, uLieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, for the interference of politicians in the work of the police as well as for disbanding the team that investigated the killing of politicians, without speaking to Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa commissioned a commission to investigate Mkhwanazi’s allegations.

When Mbalula was asked if Mbalula had authorized him to return to ANC duties, he said that he had informed him as he had previously stopped doing ANC duties, as he had written to him informing him that he would take a break as the investigation continued.

“I wrote him a letter on March 26, informing him that I am returning to ANC work,” said Mchunu.

He confirmed that he is continuing with the work of the ANC.

When he informed the ANC about his resignation from the organization, Mbalula said that they approve of Mchunu taking a break from the ANC. Mchunu also revealed that he will return to the commission to make final presentations.

“If it is in the commission’s plans to call me again to make presentations, I will return to it. I am still waiting for it to inform me so that I can close the chapter on this matter. Since I took a break, I have not spoken to Ramaphosa,” he said. He denied having a relationship with gangsters and said there was no evidence linking him to corruption.

We went to press before the ANC breathed a sigh of relief about Mchunu’s return to the organisation’s work.
