Two days after the family of a 73-year-old visitor to the Augrabies Falls National Park in the Northern Cape reported him missing, the man’s body was found along a popular hiking trail.

JP Louw, spokesperson for SANParks, says they were informed on Monday that Schalk de Witt had gone missing. “The police were immediately notified and a comprehensive search was launched in the park.”

Louw says that by Wednesday, relatives of De Witt, with the authorization of the park management, had organized an aerial search, as well as an additional search on the ground. It was during this search that his body was found on the Dassie route.

The remains were later identified as those of De Witt. The police are investigating the case.

The park expressed its condolences to the family and loved ones of De Witt.
