A 45-year-old man who is linked to the rape, kidnapping and murder of a seven-year-old girl is expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The charges against him follow after he allegedly kidnapped Kenisha (Niesha) Thompson on Saturday. Her body was found later the same day in a landfill in Second Creek in Parkside in KuGompo (formerly East London).

Brig. When asked, police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that Kenisha had been strangled.

She was last seen on Saturday when she was playing with her friends near a spaza shop. The suspect apparently approached her and asked about her father. Her friends left her with the man without letting her grandmother know about it.

According to Gantana, Kenisha’s father reported her missing to the police later that day.

“Her body was later found in a landfill and after further investigation, including witness statements from the children who played with Kenisha and a post-mortem examination confirming rape and strangulation, the suspect was arrested on Tuesday,” says Gantana.

Princess Faku, the mayor of the Buffalo City municipality, praised the relevant authorities for their investigative work and emphasized the municipality’s commitment to ensure that justice is done.

“We remain resolute in our call for accountability. Our thoughts are with the family and the community during this difficult time,” Faku said.
