A 32-year-old man from the Namakwa district in the Northern Cape was arrested on Saturday after he was caught with uncut diamonds in his possession.
According to Sgt. Molefi Shemane, police spokesperson in the province, the multidisciplinary team of Operation Vala Umgodi intensified their efforts to curb illegal mining operations in the area.
“During their operation, the police stopped a man at a mine hotspot area and searched him. Uncut diamonds were found in his possession after which he was arrested,” said Shemane.
In addition to the diamond find, the police also raided a targeted premises on Kleinsee. This raid led to the arrest of two more suspects, respectively 30 and 40 years old, on charges of drug trafficking.
“During the operation, the members seized marijuana, liquor and an amount of cash which is believed to be the proceeds of crime.”
According to Shemane, the Vala Umgodi team maintains a zero tolerance approach against the scourge of illegal mining and other related crimes in the Namakwa district.
