With his latest single, “Amper”, the singer and muscle tiger Dirk van der Westhuizen has exchanged his well-known bouncy numbers for calmer, deeper lyrics.
The brunette tells in Maroela Media’s studio that wisdom comes with grayness and that when you get older, you want to be more serious.
He reveals that a long relationship that came to an end is the inspiration behind the song.
“Everyone knows how it feels when someone walks out of your life when you didn’t want them to. It’s something I’ve been processing for the past three years, and I decided to pour it into my music,” says Dirk.
“Through the song, I want to bring hope that people in a similar situation will find someone who will make that pain disappear through love. I didn’t find someone again, but I found it in God.”

His faith and God are the pivot around which Dirk’s life revolves, and he says that through the process he only grew deeper in his faith.
“I have always had a relationship with the Lord, but you find him in a different way when you go up rock bottom is. Proclaiming God’s name has always been my priority. I ask God every day to show me what my next step should be. I’m enjoying the journey, and I absolutely trust God with it.”
Dirk’s health is also very important to him. However, it is not only about his personal goals, but also about the thousands of young fans who look up to him.
“It’s so easy to let yourself go when you’re touring, and I had to make the decision to put limits on when I perform so I can still exercise and eat healthy. I struggle to sing, act and sleep when I’m overweight. There are so many young men, even five-year-old boys, who I don’t want to disappoint. I hope that I will continue to inspire them.”
