A 22-year-old man was arrested in Limpopo on Sunday for allegedly strangling a sleeping one-year-old relative to death in Bela Bela.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the murder took place in Zuma View, Bela Bela at about 13:00.

Ledwaba said: “According to reports, the toddler’s mother was outside the room, while the toddler was inside asleep when the suspect entered the room and found the child asleep and strangled him.”

The child’s grandfather intervened and the child was taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention, he added.

However, the child was pronounced dead.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the murder and urged parents to ensure that their children were protected at all times.

The man is expected to appear in the Bela Bela Magistrate’s Court soon.
