A mother, who drowned her four-year-old daughter in buckets of water at their home in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal, was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment.Madelein Ackerman, 47, pleaded guilty to the murder of her daughter, Layla.

She appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Ackerman’s plea detailed how, on the fateful day in 2022, while the little girl was watching TV, the mother planned to take her own life by drinking benzene and sleeping tablets.
