An inmate escaped from the Waterval Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal, according to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).
Dumisani Mthethwa was part of a team assigned to work in the centre’s garden when he escaped on Monday, said the department’s spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo.
“The circumstances surrounding his escape are under investigation.”

Mthethwa was serving 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances after being sentenced on 20 March 2019.
“A detailed enquiry has been launched in order to determine if there were potential lapses in security protocols. DCS is working closely with other law enforcement agencies to apprehend the offender, Mthethwa, and return him to custody as swiftly as possible,” said Nxumalo.
“Members of the public are urged not to approach Mthethwa if seen, but to report any sightings or relevant information to the nearest correctional centre or a police station.”
