Johannesburg residents received a double whammy of charges on Monday as new electricity tariff increases kicked in and City Power’s R200 surcharge for prepaid electricity took effect.

Residents in middle- to high-income households will now be charged for using the prepaid box every month.

The R200 charge includes a R130 network capacity charge and a R70 service charge. With 15% VAT, it comes to R230.
