Julius Malema, EFF leader was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday in the Magistrate’s Court in KuGompo city (formerly East London).

Malema was found guilty in October last year on five charges relating to the breach of the Firearms Control Act.

The magistrate’s court sentenced him to five years in prison on the first charge against him, two years on the second charge and a total of R60 000 in fines on the next three charges, or six months in prison per charge.

The sentences must be served concurrently.

The defense is now applying for leave to appeal against his conviction and sentence. The proceedings continue.
