Demands around ministerial and the deputy president’s positions as well as “red lines that could not be crossed” are just some of the demands that the ANC entertained as it engaged other political parties in the formation of a government of national unity (GNU).
On Saturday, breathing a sigh of relief after securing Cyril Ramaphosa a second term as state president under the seventh administration, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula revealed some of what transpired during the coalition talks to form a GNU with political parties.
Mbalula said most of the parties that the ANC canvassed showed a keen interest in joining the GNU but raised “strategic and tactical” concerns.
