Professional wrestler and actor John Cena has opened up about his decision not to have children and how he discussed it with his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh.
According to the former WWE star, he made the decision to live kid-free years ago and has stuck by it.
The 47-year-old recently sat down with Super Bowl champion Shannon Sharpe on his podcast Club Shay Shay, where he shared how he approached his wife with the discussion in their early dating stages.
“I opened with a few uncomfortable conversations,” he told Sharpe. “Those were first or second date questions with my now-wife.”
Cena explained how he and the 33-year-old engineer built a strong foundation from the onset.
“It’s great because we both got to lean into these uncomfortable moments, address this stuff and build a foundation. Nothing is too uncomfortable to be unapproachable,” Cena added.
“Starting off with a conversation about … what is the definition of our family … helped us forge a path together as a team.”
Doubling down on earlier statements about not wanting children, Cena said he doubts that he will ever be ready.
“I don’t think I’m personally ready, nor will I ever be, to invest the time it needs to make a great parent. I want to live life,” he explained. “I still have a lot to do.”
The wrestler added that this decision didn’t take place overnight and that he had felt this way about having children for a while now.
He also encouraged everyone to find a partner who shares the same values as they do, adding that it may be hard to find at first but is definitely possible.
Cena and Shariatzadeh have been married since 2020, three years following his split from Nikki Bella.
