A research team raised concerns about traditional circumcision in the Eastern Cape. (Sithandiwe Velaphi/News24)

Smoking, drinking and having no regard for women are just some of the concerns raised by Walter Sisulu University researchers in a study which examined the relevance of traditional circumcision in the Eastern Cape.

The study was published as thousands of young men in the Eastern Cape were preparing to undergo traditional circumcision for the winter initiation season.

More than 50 initiates died in the Eastern Cape in 2023 due, in most cases, to botched circumcisions.
