“What nonsense is this? How can my brother just disappear from his job, and no one has answers? The SANDF must answer.”

These are the words of a Cradock, Eastern Cape, family whose loved one, 53-year-old Luntu Basil Hatta, a soldier at the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), disappeared without trace from the base in Lohatla in the Northern Cape more than three weeks ago.

The soldier’s brother, Sithembile, said he last spoke to his brother on 24 May, just days before Luntu and a group of soldiers were to be deployed to Limpopo for the general elections.
