Durban City (0) 2

TS Galaxy (1) 1

DURBAN City made history by becoming the first KwaZulu-Natal team in history to win the Nedbank Cup defeating TS Galaxy in the Nedbank final on Saturday evening at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane.

The goals that ensured the end of the 16-year trophy drought in KwaZulu-Natal were scored between Mfanafuthi Mkhize and Jean Lwamba.

Lwamba, a striker from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute to make up for his mistake, since the Galaxy had scored a goal through him when the spear stabbed home in the first half.

City not only ended the trophy drought in KZN that ended with Lamontville Golden Arrows in the 2009/10 season by winning the MTN8, but also ended the 54-year streak in which the province was seen as a contender in the playoffs.

Since the 1971 season this competition is known as Life Challenge, KwaZulu-Natal teams have been unable to win it. Among the KZN teams that have reached the finals in the past are AmaZulu FC, African Wanderers, Manning Rangers, and City, who bowed out in the finals in the 2017/18 season, are still called Marizburg United.

City, which is its first season being promoted to the Betway Premiership, came to this final with the aim of making its own history by winning its first trophy since its establishment.

On the other hand, Galaxy came to this game determined to win the title for the second time since they won it in the 2018/19 season beating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0.

Citizens is coached by Pitso Dladla who is still in charge and made his own history by winning his first trophy in the Premiership category.
