Lawrence Maleka is a lobola negotiator in Netflix’s newest romantic comedy, Lobola Man. The film, which also stars Kwanele Mthethwa and Sandile Mahlangu, will premiere on the streaming service next Friday. “It’s going to be a great movie, man. I want people to tune in and tell me what they think of the craft and everything we’ve put in,” said Maleka.

One of this year’s Durban July sponsors, Pongrácz Méthode Cap Classique, has a rich history in SA wine. Named after Hungarian aristocrat Desiderius Pongrácz (Pongi), who became a prolific viticulturist for the then Distillers. He was one of the leading proponents of illegally (at the time) securing quality plant material in the 1980s. There is so little written about the man who championed the quality of wine in South Africa that we had to take a moment to remember while contemplating what MCC to toast at the 2024 Durban July.
