The Denver informal settlement where victims of the Marshalltown fire were relocated.
Victims of the deadly Marshalltown fire of August 2023 have suffered yet another disaster in a City of Johannesburg-supplied informal settlement.
The Marshalltown Fire Justice Campaign, a group of activists working with the victims of the fire that broke out at the Usindiso building on 80 Albert Street in the Johannesburg CBD, have raised the alarm after the fire survivors’ shacks were flooded after the heavy rains on Friday last week.
Around 40 families who survived the fire were evicted from temporary shelters around the City last November and taken to Denver, an industrial suburb in eastern Johannesburg, where 231 newly built corrugated “shack structures” were constructed by the City.
